Why You Must Define Your Why

Darren Hardy, Editor of ‘Success’ magazine has a great presentation that demonstrates the importance of knowing your WHY.

I’ll tell you his story in a second, (you’ll get a kick out of it) …But first let me tell you what I mean when I talk about your ‘WHY’.

Let’s use ‘Jane’ as an example…

Say Jane’s goal is to have more ‘moolah’ in the bank. Her WHY is not simply

“because she likes having a healthy bank balance”…

That would be incorrect. She needs to look a bit deeper into her own motivations.

The real reason she wants more moolah is because of what a healthy bank balance can DO FOR HER. That’s her real motivation…

Now let’s get down to specifics.

Jane says; “I want to earn $200,000 per-year so I can afford to send my kids to a quality private school, and take my family away on holidays once every six months… If I earned this much, I could give my kids the start in life they deserve and we’d all get to enjoy more quality time as a family”.

See Jane’s WHY?

Got to give your brain a clear target. This is SO important from both a motivation P.O.V and a goal setting P.O.V.

Darren Hardy, on stage, articulates it brilliantly…

“Let’s say I’m going to put a plank across the front of this stage and give anyone who walks across that plank twenty dollars. Hands up anyone who would do it.”

[The audience all put their hands up]

“It’s easy money so of course we’d all do it. I’m now going to take that plank and place it between two buildings on the 10th floor. Same deal – twenty dollars for anyone who’ll walk across the plank. Who will do it now?”

[No-one puts their hand up (except a couple of ‘thrill seekers’)]

“Okay, so now the other building is on fire, your child is lying unconscious in that other building and the flames are licking at their neck – who would do it now?”

[The audience all put their hands up]

“So what changed? Same danger, same variables… What changed was the WHY. With a strong enough WHY we will do just about anything to achieve our goals.”

To your success,

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a book from our area library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent info being shared freely out there.
